BRAIN SURGERY THROUGH THE NOSEHOLE WITH ENDOSCOPIC PITUITARY SURGERY
Brain and Nerve Surgery Specialist Op.Dr. Celal Özbek ÇAKIR: “Transsphenoidal surgery is a surgery performed by entering through the nasal cavity and reaching the pituitary base and from there to the pituitary gland. With this method, surgery, which is normally done by opening the skull, can be performed without touching any of these structures. Our patient, aged 72, came to us with sudden eyelid drooping, vision loss and severe headache. During the patient's examination, we saw that there was a large mass in the space where the pituitary gland is located at the base of the skull, which we call sella, and that the cranial nerves in this area were under pressure, so we decided to have surgery. “We completely evacuated the tumor with a transsphenoidal approach and took the patient to the service without any problems.” Removing the tumor in the pituitary region of the brain at the base of the skull by entering through the nose using micro tools and a micro camera has two important benefits. The aim is to reach the tumor in a short time without opening the skull, make as few incisions as possible, and make the patient's hospital stay much shorter during the healing process.
